Meaning of Recruitment
Careful selection of an employee is very important. A misfit will cause serious consequences. Employees, who are selected for work unsuitable to their aptitude and training, usually tend to be inefficient. This upsets other employees and affects the general morale. Moreover, badly selected employees do not usually stay long with the organization. Either they leave or discharged or the time and money spent on them is wasted. A good recruitment procedure will influence the successful candidate in his future attitude to the firm.

The process recruitment and selection of employees is not easy, it is one of the most important aspects for running any business. This is meant to help for planning recruitment and selection of employees.

Selection

The term ‘selection ‘denotes a choice of one or some from amongst many. The vital importance of making the right selection of staff for any enterprise cannot be overemphasized. While selecting employees, it should be borne in mind that they are the greatest source of an organization. Building and money are always secondary. The critical element is always the spirit, teamwork and the skill of the organization’s personnel. Everything can be bought or reproduced except skilled and dedicated service.

Recruitment or selection of employees is itself, a quite tricky business. The advertisement for recruitment should be such that it can attract maximum applications from a number of suitable candidates. Among these applications, best possible selection of candidates could be made. This, in itself, is a big order just as much as it demands a great deal of foresight, clarity of thought and anticipation and skill in drafting the advertisement. It is also to be presupposed that most of the applicants would be or may be raw hands, with no work experience. Yet, there might be other applicants who possess certain amount of experience but for improving their prospects, are looking for a suitable change. Both from the point of view of the advertiser or employer as well as the applicant, a prospective employee with a clear description of the job advertised is necessary so that the applicant is made fully aware of what information is expected from him and accordingly, he furnishes it.

Job analysis/description

Job description is a broad statement of purpose, shape, duties and responsibilities of a particular job. It provides the detailed factual nformation required by candidates and selectors alike in order to obtain thorough knowledge of the requirement of a job. To avoid any controversy, a job description ought to be prepared jointly by human resource department and head of concerned department.
